In July of 2022, Rich and I were able to get back to Bermuda to celebrate our 30th wedding anniversary. “Back to the scene of the crime,” as Rich said. We were married in Bermuda in 1992 at Honeymoon Point in Southampton Parish. It was a beautiful spot with a Bermuda Moongate and a waterfall overlooking the ocean. Honeymoon Point was on the grounds of the old Sonesta hotel, which was later destroyed by Hurricane Fabian in 2003. The site is now a private beach club with no public access. But back in the 1980s and 90s, Honeymoon Point was a popular wedding location.
This time, we stayed in a lovely Airbnb studio apartment on the Cliffs of Marley overlooking the ocean. The place was perfect and affordable with a fabulous view. We loved the little patio and spent a lot of time just enjoying the view. There was also a private pool and beach. If we ever get the chance to go back to Bermuda, I would definitely stay in the same place. The beachfront hotels in Bermuda are way too expensive these days.
Bermuda is such a beautiful island. We spent a lot of time exploring. We rented a Vespa to get around. These days, the island no longer encourages moped or scooter use because too many tourists were getting into accidents. The roads are narrow and winding, and driving on the left side of the road can be confusing for Americans, especially the “roundabouts” or rotaries, also known as traffic circles, that are commonly found in Bermuda. Rich is an experienced motorcycle driver, so we had no problems riding around with the Vespa. I sat in the back and navigated; basically, I just kept saying “stay left,” and we did fine.
We did a lot of walking along the paths behind the south beaches, walking from Horseshoe Bay to Long Bay beach, and all the beautiful little beaches along the way. We also walked many miles of the scenic Bermuda Railway Trail.
Here are a couple of photos at our private beach. The waves were pretty strong in this area.
One day, we rented a boat and spent the day exploring the west end of the island. We saw some turtles and a shipwreck. We also did some snorkeling. Best day ever!
One night, we went to a BBQ at The Reefs Resort & Club. There was some live entertainment, good food, and a fun bonfire at the end of the evening.
Our favorite beach in Bermuda is Elbow Beach. The old Elbow Beach Hotel – which used to be the premier resort on the island – has been closed down for several years. Such a shame, as it’s a beautiful location. I did read recently that the hotel will be demolished and replaced with a new luxury property. I’m sure it will be very expensive. At the other end of Elbow Beach is the Coral Beach & Tennis Club, also expensive. However, there is public access to the beach, so it can still be enjoyed without spending a fortune.
